Hey gang, Hayley here!
Marathon training is long and tough and sometimes boring and... did I mention long? You have weeks and weeks and hours and hours of pounding that pavement to get through… Why not make things a little easier (and more enjoyable) for yourself and join a running crew!? You don’t have to be training for a marathon, you could be focused on shorter distances or you could even be a brand new runner. Regardless of your distance, pace or level of experience, you will find a group that suits you, supports you and makes ticking those miles off, that little bit easier.
In no particular order, here’s my top 5 reasons to join a run squad;
1: They’re almost always totally free! You get the bonus of being led by a professional, who will undoubtedly be happy to help you make minor adjustments to your run form, if needed. Helping you to run safe, happy and injury free right through the year without spending a fortune on coaching and physio sessions.
2: There will always be one close by, especially if you’re City based! If you’re new to an area - even better, no friends yet? No worry! You will form an instant friendship group, runners are kinda awesome - if I don’t say so myself! ;)
3: You will discover new parts of the area you live in. I have found it incredible how running has helped me piece together bits of London that I didn’t even know existed before. I now feel confident run commuting where possible and find myself relying less and less on google maps when getting places! Now that’s independence!
4: You will get fit! This goes without saying but what the heck, I’m gonna say it anyway! If your run training has been a bit lacklustre of late (which it can tend to be when running alone), join a group and stretch the distance! Or, if you’re feeling brave, jump up a pace group! Similar to race situations, you will always tend to run faster when you have the support and (friendly) competition of a group of runners.
5: Accountability. It’s cold, it’s raining - you’re tempted to skip your run for today. You start coming up with all the reasons why tomorrow is better, why today just isn’t the day for it. When you’ve planned to meet a group to run, backing out just isn’t an option! No one wants to be seen as that fair-weather pansy! Then when you do make it out on the run (go you!) you’re much less likely to quit when the going gets tough! No one else is stopping, so neither are you! I have been in this position a few times and 9 times out of 10 you ride out the rough patch and 5 minutes later you’re feeling much stronger!
So there you have it! 5 reasons why running with a crew is awesome! I tend to run with Adidas Runners but there is also Nike Run Club, London Midnight Runners, LDN Brunch Club… along with many more! Have a bit of a google and find one that is close to you or looks like it might be a good fit!
Happy running! See you out there?
